Seabrook, NH to Plum Island, MA Bike Ride
Saturday, May 11
10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Please arrive 10 minutes prior to departure time!
Today we will join ride with members from North Shore Bicycling for Fun! So strap on your helmets once again and join us for another round of pedal-pushing fun! We will start on the Marsh Trail. We’ll exercise the safe, bike-only lane on the Gillis Bridge and do the loop-de-loop around Newburyport’s Clipper City Rail Trail (via the MBTA train station platform). Then, it’s eastward for a breezy jaunt to the sandy stretches of Plum Island Point. We'll be on a narrow road, so we'll pedal slowly and proceed with caution for the next quarter mile or so. Very shortly, we'll reach the Plum Island Turnpike, where the road is quite wide, giving us plenty of room for our bikes.
Along the way out to Plum Island, we'll pass the P.I. Airport, Mass Audubon, and stop at the Parker River Wildlife Refuge Headquarters for a bathroom break. After we cross the Plum Island Bridge, we'll take the second right onto Southern Boulevard and head south and loop around to connect with Northern Boulevard.
IMPORTANT: At 55th Street, we'll turn right onto Reservation Terrace to ride along the beach. Stay with the group so you don't miss this turn! We'll take 78th Street on the return trip.
We’ll break for lunch at picturesque Plum Island Point for ~30 minutes and bask in the midday sun.
Upon resuming our ride, we'll be exploring a few of the quaint back roads on the island. We'll turn right onto 78th Street and then ride the narrow streets along the Plum Island Basin before we emerge again onto Northern Boulevard. From there, we'll retrace our route back to Joppa Park and then proceed toward downtown Newburyport. This final leg of our trip takes us along the Merrimack River, past marinas, a lighthouse, the historic Custom House Maritime Museum, the Firehouse Center for the Arts, and the downtown boardwalk.
We'll make a quick stop for a final bathroom break at the harbormaster Building located on the picturesque boardwalk. Incidentally, we’ll snap a group picture here. Then we proceed back over the Gillis Bridge to the Salisbury trails and the parking lot.
NOTE 1: Bike riding is not allowed on the boardwalk, so we'll circumvent, adapt, and be creative to reach the parking lot and the Gills Bridge.
NOTE 2: All NSBFF organizers are guaranteed a spot.
Total riding distance: approximately 21 miles Trail surface: The Marsh and Clipper City trails are paved. Bike type: Any bike is OK. Lunch: Bring lunch or a snack to enjoy at Plum Island Point.
